The Will That Changed Everything

A combination of both. You can divide your estate between individuals and charities, creating a legacy that reflects your values and relationships.

Healthcare and Financial Decision-Making

Estrangement doesn't just affect what happens after you die. It affects who makes decisions for you if you become incapacitated.

Create a healthcare proxy. This document names someone you trust to make medical decisions on your behalf. Without it, hospitals may default to your legal next of kin — your estranged family — even if you haven't spoken to them in years.

Create a durable power of attorney. This allows someone you trust to manage your finances if you cannot. Without it, your estranged family may petition the court for guardianship and gain control over your money and property.
